One excellent set can prove that a weight is possible. It does not prove that a heavier weight is the best next target. Sustainable progress means repeatedly completing the planned work at the intended effort and technical standard, so a small increase is likely to preserve the exercise’s purpose.
That distinction matters. Adding weight is one form of progressive overload, not a reward you must claim after every good day. The decision is stronger when the whole set pattern supports it, not just the most flattering number in the log.
Use four signals together
Before increasing the load, review four parts of the prescription:
- Rep range: Did each working set stay inside the planned range, and did you reach the relevant progression target?
- Completed sets: Did you complete all target sets, rather than judging the exercise from one strong first set?
- Technical quality: Were range of motion, setup, control, and rep standard consistent enough to compare with earlier sessions?
- RIR: How many clean reps did you estimate were left? If you need a refresher, RIR means reps in reserve, not extra reps completed with shortened range or a major technique change.
No signal is perfect alone. Reps without RIR can hide a set taken closer to failure; RIR without stable technique can give false confidence. A strong first set followed by two missed targets may reflect pacing, rest, or an already challenging load.
A clear double-progression decision flow
Double progression has two stages: build reps within a range, then add weight and begin again nearer the bottom. It is a decision system, not a promise of weekly progress.
Suppose your bench press prescription is 3 sets of 6–8 reps at about RIR 2:
- Keep the same load while you add clean reps within 6–8.
- Check all three sets, not only the first one.
- When you reach the upper limit on every target set—8, 8, 8—confirm that technique remained stable and the sets were still around RIR 2.
- At the next comparable session, use the smallest practical load increase.
- Accept that the new load may move your result back toward the lower end, then build reps again.
For example, 70 kg for 8, 8, 8 at roughly RIR 2 with consistent pauses and range of motion supports trying 72.5 kg next time. If it produces 7, 7, 6 at the intended effort, build from there. But 70 kg for 8, 8, 8 with the last two sets at RIR 0, shortened range, or assistance fails the same check. Repeating 70 kg more cleanly can be better progress.
One great set is therefore insufficient. If the target was 3 × 6–8 and the log reads 8, 6, 5, the first set reached the top but the planned work did not. Consider whether you opened too aggressively, rested too briefly, or need another exposure at the current load.
Choose an increment the exercise can absorb
The size of an increase should be judged relative to the exercise and the current load. A 2.5 kg total increase may be a manageable next step on a bench press or squat, yet far too large on a curl. On a curl, a 0.5–1 kg total increase, a fractional plate, or one more clean rep may preserve the rep range and technique better. These are examples, not universal prescriptions.
Equipment sets the available steps. A dumbbell jump from 10 kg to 12.5 kg is 25% per hand, although “one dumbbell up” sounds small. Stay at 10 kg to finish the rep range or improve control, or choose a more finely loadable exercise. There is no context-free rule such as “add 2.5 kg every week.” The 2026 ACSM position stand emphasizes progressive training tailored to the goal and individual. An eight-week randomized trial in trained participants found that progressing repetitions and load both produced adaptations, with outcome-specific differences. Load still matters, but adding a rep can be real progress while you earn the next sensible increase.
When another kind of progress is better
Keep the weight unchanged and choose a different target when:
- Reps still have room to grow: If your target is 3 × 8–12 and you recorded 12, 11, 10, aim to add a rep to one of the limiting sets before increasing load.
- Technical quality is not repeatable: Standardize depth, range of motion, pause, setup, or control so future numbers describe the same exercise.
- The available jump is too large: Add reps inside the programmed range or use smaller plates, adjustable dumbbells, or a more finely loadable variation.
- More volume is deliberately needed: An extra set can be appropriate when the program calls for more work and you are recovering well, but it changes the recovery cost. Do not add sets casually just because the load did not rise.
These options make the next load increase more useful instead of turning it into a technical compromise.
Let RIR change the decision
If the target reps are being completed comfortably and RIR is rising across comparable sessions—for example, the same 3 × 8 moves from about RIR 2 to RIR 3–4 while technique remains stable—a smallest-available load increase may be reasonable. If you record RPE instead, use the same idea through effort: higher RPE means less reserve. The RPE/RIR calculator can turn a recent set into a starting load estimate, but the first working set still decides whether that estimate fits today.
Move the other way when technique breaks down, target reps are missed, or recovery is poor. Repeat the load, reduce it enough to restore the intended work, or adjust the day’s target. Check rest, exercise order, sleep, recent volume, and life stress. RIR is subjective—its accuracy can vary with load and proximity to failure—so seek a pattern, not precision from one estimate.
One bad workout is not a plateau
A poor session is one data point. Travel, sleep, food, stress, setup, or earlier exercises can affect it. If the next comparable session is normal, there was probably nothing to fix.
A plateau is better treated as a repeated pattern: across several comparable exposures, load, reps, technique, and RIR are no longer improving. Before changing the program, make the comparisons fair. Use the same exercise variation and rep standard, note major changes in rest or exercise order, and ask whether recovery has deteriorated. If several lifts stall together and fatigue is accumulating, learning what a deload week is may be more useful than forcing an increase on one lift.
Use estimated 1RM as a supporting trend
Estimated 1RM can compress a weight-and-rep set into one number. If estimates from comparable, technically consistent sets rise over time, that trend supports the case that strength is improving. The comparison is most useful when you use the same formula, exercise variation, rep standard, and similar effort.
It should not decide the load alone. Formulas cannot see shorter range of motion, a change from RIR 3 to RIR 0, or an outlier set; higher-rep predictions can also be less certain. Treat it as a dashboard indicator and read estimated 1RM versus tested 1RM before calling it a test result.
Pain is not a progression problem
Pain, suspected injury, swelling, sudden loss of function, or worsening symptoms are not solved with a clever rep range. Avoid the provoking movement and seek an appropriately qualified healthcare professional, especially when symptoms are severe, persistent, traumatic, or worsening. A lower RIR target, a deload, or motivation is not a diagnosis.
Set the next target from your LogWise history

- All sets reached the upper limit with stable technique and target RIR: use the smallest practical load increase.
- Some sets remain below the upper limit: keep the load and add one clean rep to a limiting set.
- The reps were completed only by losing technique or reserve: repeat the load and improve the quality of the work.
- Several comparable sessions are down and recovery is poor: hold or reduce the target, then review volume, rest, and recovery before progressing.
Write that target in the exercise note before the next session. “72.5 kg: stay within 6–8 at RIR 2” is more useful than “go heavier.” It gives you a pass condition, a reason to repeat the load when needed, and a record you can evaluate afterward.
Increase the weight when the entire performance—not one exciting set—shows that the next increment can preserve the plan. Otherwise improve reps, completed work, technique, or recovery first. That makes progress repeatable.
